Vera S. Hadley, Interactive Content Producer for FOX 2 St. Louis

Bio: Vera Culley grew up in East St. Louis, Illinois.  Educated in the East St. Louis School District, Vera graduated as Valedictorian of the East St. Louis Sr. High School Class of 1998.  Upon graduation, Vera attended the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign where she earned her Broadcast Journalist degree in 2002. While in college, Vera tried her hand at several different interests and career option to ensure she would have numerous skills when she graduated. She served for four years in the University of Illinois Black Chorus, at 100-plus voice choir in which she was a soprano section leader and a student conductor.
Vera also enjoyed and learned photography skills in her photo journalism labs.   She also studied to budding online news industry and dabbled in website design and management. When Vera left college, she was blessed to be accepted for a position as a writer at KPLR 11 News. She quickly became a integral part of the newsroom and was given more duties including assignment editor and web producer.

After five years at KPLR 11, Vera accepted a position with FOX 2 News in St. Louis as a web producer.  She refined her skills for news and online reporting, story editing and website operations and management. In her time, she’s covered major stories in St. Louis news online including the discovery of Shawn Hornbeck, the ABB shooting, and many more.

Since being at FOX 2, she has also moved into broadcast appearing every morning on FOX 2 News at 6 a.m. to show viewers what they can find on FOX2now.com, STLMoms.com and other KTVI/KPLR property websites.

When Vera leaves her job at FOX 2, she heads off to what she calls her ‘real job’: wife and mother.   She enjoys spending time with her 8 and 3 year old boys as well as her husband, Sean.   Now, she admits, being a working mother who has be up at 3:30 in the morning and doesn’t go to sleep until 10 p.m. is challenging, but she’ll do anything in the world for her boys, so she just keeps pushing and makes it work.

Vera says she enjoys the good times and prays for God’s guidance and wisdom through the rough times.  Her favorite scripture is from Psalms 46 – “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore will we not fear, though the earth be removed and the mountains be cast into the midst of the sea.  God is in the midst of her, she shall not be moved. The Lord will help her, and that right early!” “And that is how you get through the day,” Vera says.

Pros and Cons of a Nonprofit…

Let’s start with the Pros:

• You will get the overwhelming satisfaction of making a difference in society
• You will receive tax exemption on most income as a 501(c)3
• You will qualify to receive grants from foundations and corporations
• You will qualify to receive tax-deductible contributions from your donors

Now with the Cons:

• Nonprofit employees are taxed on their income, just like for-profit employees
• The IRS requires the filing of an annual report with the IRS. The density of this report increases, as your nonprofit’s income increases.
• Competing for grant money is very difficult, and receiving individual donations can be challenging. You will be competing with larger organizations that are more established and have a stronger track record.
• If you decide to close your nonprofit organization you aren’t allowed to take any of the organization’s assets with you.

There’s a BIG myth that states, “nonprofit organizations cannot profit, and the services and products of a nonprofit organization are supposed to be free or underpriced.” Lets clarify the facts. There are several multi-million dollar nonprofit organizations that profit greatly, and can be beneficial to the organization accomplishment of its mission. Cash flow keeps an organization alive, whether it’s a for-profit or nonprofit. The non profit organization must be sure to use its profits for the organizational expenses such as operation cost etc… However the organization cannot use the extra money to benefit the officers, directors or employees of the organization.

 1.    First you need a name, mission and vision:

Before you do anything, you need a business name, mission and vision. This is the foundation of starting any type of business. When deciding on a name for your business, start brainstorming ideas. Write down names that may come to mind.

2.    Set a day once a month to host a workshop, topic discussion or some type of activity to bring youth together for mentoring:

Decide what would be a convenient day for you and a volunteer to host an activity or event that helps fulfill your mission.  Think about your potential clients and think about what works best for your schedule.

3.    Find a convenient location to meet with youth.

There are several locations to host your mentoring program. Most libraries have free meeting rooms for community groups and nonprofit organizations.

4.    Start telling all your family, friends and co-workers.

When starting any business, the people who support you and are the ones who are closest to you, they should be the first individuals who know about your organization.  Word of mouth is the best marketing tools when starting your business.

5.    Order your marketing material to spread the word.

Another great and low cost marketing tool is creating flyers and business cards to spread the word. This is an even greater way of getting others to find out about your organization. Your marketing material should reflect your business brand. Your name, logo, programs and contact information should be listed on the advertisement.

6.    Make a commitment to consistently offer programming monthly.

It’s vital that you are consistent and your programs are reliable. As a leader of your organization it will be your responsibility to display commitment and sustainability.

It’s almost impossible to expect to have a successful business without a mission statement. When writing your mission statement think about the influence you would like to have with the girls you mentor. What are some important topics or life skills you would like to teach. Also think about the results you would like to see happen in their lives, such as enhancing their self-esteem, body image or academics?  Below I’ve listed two important questions that most people want to know when writing a mission statement:

• What should every mission statement have? The best mission statements include the purpose, benefits and works of the organization. Your mission statement helps you to identify your ideas, goals and inspirations for your organization.
• What should I do before writing my mission statement? Before writing your mission statement its important that you spend some time thinking about what your organization hopes to accomplish.  The mission statement gives you direction. It’s a constant reminder of your purpose and where you are headed as an organization.
